THE ROME OF THE NORTH
The World Heritage City of Bamberg is endowed with one of Europe's largest intact old town centres. The stunning baroque style in which it is mainly built, dates from the 17th and 18th centuries. There are many objects of interest like the Bamberg Cathedral from 1237 which considered an important example of German architecture from the Romanesque to the Gothic periods. For example the famous Bamberg Horseman, the Lady Alter by Veit Stoß and the tomb of Emperor Heinrich II. and his wife. The Cathedral also contains the only Papal tomb north of the Alps. Next to the Cathedral are the Old Residence and the New Residence with a very nice place called the Rose Garden where you have a great panorama view over Bamberg. There are many Churches, for example the "Obere Pfarre" a gothic building or the cloister St. Michael or St. Martin, a baroque church build by the Jesuit. The old Town Hall of Bamberg was build 1386 in the River Regnitz. It marks the border between the Clerical City on the Hills and the merchant's City. And there are many more remarkable sights. But Bamberg is not only a nice old town. It has also many cafes, pups and breweries. The tradition of beer breweries goes back to 1093 and there are still nine privat breweries including the well known breweries "Spezial und Schlenkerla" which is famous for its smoked beer. There are lots of nice beer gardens spread all over the city, which are – especially in spring and summer – highly recommended and a real excitement!
